Subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council,
serviced by the UNECE secretariat. This 19th session is the first
session of the 2001-2002 cycle of work. The Sub-Committee will consider
proposals for amendments to the UN Model Regulations on the Transport
of Dangerous Goods concerning, inter alia, carriage in tanks and
bulk containers, testing of packagings, classification of substances
hazardous to the environment and classification of fireworks.

The second meeting of the Working Group will be
divided into a meeting of the technical working group, dealing with
issues, such as substances, activities and transfer (2-4 July) and
the formal meeting of the Working Group (5-6 July), which is expected
inter alia to decide on the form of the instrument.

Ad Hoc Multidisciplinary Group of Experts on
Safety in Tunnels

This session will be the fourth and final meeting
of the Group of Experts on Safety in Road Tunnels. At this session,
it is expected that the Group of Experts will adopt United Nations
recommendations aimed at improving safety in tunnels, particularly
as regards traffic rules, tunnel management, infrastructure standards,
dangerous goods transport and vehicle standards. Once adopted, the
recommendations will be examined by the subsidiary bodies of the
Inland Transport Committee with the objective of integrating them
into the appropriate legal instruments.

Sub-Committee of Experts on the Globally Harmonized
System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (First session)

First session of this subsidiary body of the Economic
and Social Council (ECOSOC resolution 1999/65), serviced by the
UNECE secretariat. This session will be devoted mainly to organizational
matters. The Sub-Committee will also consider how to consolidate
the work done since 1992, pursuant to Agenda 21, Chapter 19, Programme
Area B, by the ILO, OECD and the Sub-Committee of Experts on the
Transport of Dangerous Goods for the elaboration of a Globally Harmonized
System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

Regional Consultative Meeting for the World
Summit on Sustainable Development

The meeting will consider a draft Ministerial Statement
to be adopted by the Regional Ministerial Meeting in September.
This Statement will be the key political component of the input
of the ECE region to the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(Johannesburg, 2002) and will contain commitments and proposals
for action at both regional and global levels.
