Joint ECE/Eurostat Meeting on the Management of Statistical Information Technology

The meeting will consider namely the following substantive issues: (i) Challenges and opportunities for statistical offices working in a network environment; (ii) The impact of data warehousing on the management of statistical offices; (iii) Integration of statistical (survey) data with registers (administrative) data; (iv) Resource management in statistical offices and the role of information technology.

Ad Hoc Expert Group on the Computerization of the TIR Procedure, First session

The expert group will focus on available technologies and experiences made by Customs authorities in computerizing Customs procedures. Presentations will be made by invited experts on so-called Smart Documents, Smart Microchip Cards and EDI networks among national Customs authorities. Following the meeting, expert groups will prepare technical, administrative and legal arrangements and procedures allowing for the computerization of the TIR system as part of Phase III of the TIR revision process.

Workshop under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution,
"The Measurement and Economic Valuation of the Health Effects of Air Pollution"

This is the first in a series of workshops under the newly formed Network of Experts on Benefits and Economic Instruments. The aim of the workshop is to establish the state-of-the-art in the combined areas of epidemiology and economic valuation. The workshop will review methodologies to assess and value the impacts of air pollution on human health, both with respect to morbidity and increased mortality. The result is aimed at providing input to the assessments of the economic benefits of air pollution abatement to support future policy development under the LRTAP Convention.

Workshop on Implementation of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Abatement Techniques in the Surface Coating and Surface Degreasing

The aim of the workshop is to review the approach of the Parties to control emissions of VOCs from stationary sources in general and from the surface coating and surface degreasing sectors/activities in particular. The workshop will also serve as a forum to facilitate the exchange of information on VOC control options/technology between western countries and countries with economies in transition.

Working Party on Customs Questions Affecting Transport (WP.30),

The Working Party will review the status of the 14 United Nations Conventions in the field of border crossing facilitation which are administered by the Working Party. In particular, the Working Party will consider and decide on a new annex to the International Convention on the Harmonization of Frontier Controls of Goods, the possible preparation of two new Conventions for Customs transit by rail, progress in the current revision of the TIR Convention as well as a large number of issues relating to the application of the TIR Customs transit procedure.

TIR Administrative Committee,

The TIR Administrative Committee, the highest administrative organ representing all 63 Contracting States and the European Community to the TIR Convention is convened at least twice a year and is serviced by the ECE secretariat. At its spring session, the Committee will review the activities, budget and cost plans for 2000 and 2001 of its executive organ, the TIR Executive Board (TIRExB), elect 9 members of the TIRExB for a two year term, provide guidance for all work to be undertaken under the present Phase III of the TIR revision process and adopt amendment proposals and comments to the text of the TIR Convention, 1975.

Joint Ad Hoc Expert Group on Transport and the Environment, First session

The Joint Expert Group is mandated to assist the Joint ECE Meeting on Transport and the Environment in identifying priorities for the effective implementation of the so-called "Vienna Programme of Joint Action" (POJA) which had been adopted by the ECE Ministerial Conference on Transport and the Environment held in 1997 in Vienna. The Expert group will, in particular, prepare the 2002 mid-term review of the POJA, review progress made in its implementation at the national and international levels and propose possibly new priorities to be tackled. The Expert Group will also review the mandated activities undertaken by ECE and WHO in the follow-up to the London Charter on Transport, Environment and Health.
