The Joint Meeting on
Transport and the Environment at its 4th session is
expected to agree upon the steps to be taken to implement the decisions
of the High Level Meeting on Transport, Environment and Health (4
May 2001), related to the rationalization and streamlining of the
Vienna and London processes and to the further preparation of the
proposal on a framework convention. It will also review the progress
in implementing the national and international activities in the Programme
of Joint Action and look into the priority setting for international
activities in POJA. |

Annual plenary session
of the Conference of European Statisticians, a principal subsidiary
body of the UNECE and the UN Statistical Commission. The membership
consists of heads of national statistical offices of the UNECE member
countries, with regular attendance of representatives of the OECD
countries that are not members of UNECE. The main issues to be discussed
at this years plenary session are the coordination of the multilateral
statistical work programmes undertaken in the UNECE region with particular
focus on the following three topics: (i) Internet and the dissemination
of statistics; (ii) new manuals in the field of economic statistics;
and (iii) measuring the new economy and adapting to it. A one-day
seminar on small area statistics and statistics for small countries
will also be included in this years plenary session.

The workshop, hosted
by the US Environment Protection Agency, will bring together international
experts from the global and regional atmospheric chemistry communities
to assess the current state of knowledge, identify research needs,
and improve coordination of research efforts with regard to a series
of specific scientific questions of interest to the international
environmental policy and research communities: Does the current state
of knowledge about the transport of photooxidants and fine particles
allow the calculation of source-receptor relationships between anthropogenic
emissions in North America and Europe and concentrations and visibility
impacts in North America, Europe, and the Arctic? What are the key
uncertainties in these source-receptor relationships? What research
activities could help reduce these uncertainties? |

The expert group will
especially focus on the objectives of the computerization process,
the elements to be addressed at the international level in relation
to the computerization, repercussions of the computerization process
on existing legal provisions and administrative procedures, the role
of the various actors in the TIR procedure in the computerization
process and technical aspects to be considered as a result of the
computerization process. A possible follow-up of the meeting could
be to convene a meeting of the TIR Contact Group in order to provide
a platform for all concerned parties to address the issue. |

to road vehicle safety, protection of the environment and conservation
