Roundtable on Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Data Collection

09 November 2023 14:00 - 16:00

Decarbonising the transport is vital for meeting the Paris Agreement’s objectives. Electrifying vehicle fleets and shifting to less polluting modes of transport are key strategies for aligning the sector with a climate-neutral future and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2021, new registrations of electric passenger cars accounted for 9% of total new passenger car registrations in 33 ECE countries with available data, up from 5% in 2020. However, a potential barrier to mass adoption is “range anxiety”, where the lack of publicly accessible chargers (and their speed) is seen as a concern. Therefore, understanding how various countries are progressing in the provision of public charging infrastructure is of public policy interest, which means that official statistics in this domain can provide significant added value. For meaningful international comparisons, standardized definitions and metrics are essential.

In light of this situation, the UNECE organized a roundtable discussion to stimulate a dialogue aimed at improving our understanding of the current state of national-level EV charging infrastructure. Attended by over 50 participants from 23 member States, the meeting provided a platform for participants to share their experiences and the challenges they encountered when collecting EV charging infrastructure data. The valuable insights gathered from these discussions will be used to refine international definitions, identify suitable indicators for consistent measurement, and assess the feasibility of incorporating this data into the Common Questionnaire, which is conducted annually by UNECE, Eurostat, and the ITF. The discussion will continue at the 75th session of the Working Party on Transport Statistics (WP.6), scheduled to be held on April 24-26, 2024.
