Methane Monday

The seventh session of the Methane Mondays series was titled: “Coal industry in transition: state of affairs of coal mine closure in the selected UNECE member States - challenges, lessons learned, ongoing projects, perspectives for the future.”

The event was delivered within the framework of the 29th International Science and Technology Conference: Natural Mining Hazards 2022 which was held on 8-10 November in Jaworze Poland, and  constituted a part of the 12th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development.

The focus of the session was on mine closure situation in the UNECE member States. The presentations discussed: 

  • Challenges, 
  • Lessons learned,
  • Ongoing projects, and
  • Perspectives for the future.


The technical issues that were addressed in the delivered presentations included, among others: 

  • Methane management, 
  • Water management, and
  • Land repurposing. 


While presentation analysed the situation in various UNECE member States, such as Germany, Poland, and Romania, the main focus was given to the state of affairs of mine closure processes in Albania and Serbia.
