Mission to New York, USA, 1 – 5 March 2023

The Special Envoy travelled to New York, USA from 1 to 5 March to meet with the following Government officials, partners and UN officials, to strengthen the Friends of the Special Envoy network; mobilize stakeholders towards making progress on road safety; follow up on the outcome of the 2022 HLM; urge engagement in the JCDecaux Campaign on Road Safety; and encourage support to the UNRSF:

•    H.E. Mr. Cheikh Niang, Ambassador of Senegal;
•    H.E. Mr. Maurizio Massari, Ambassador of Italy;
•    H.E. Mr. Magnus Lennartson, Deputy Ambassador of Sweden;
•    H.E. Ms. Nathalie Broadhurst, Deputy Ambassador of France;
•    Mr. Nick Hill, Minister Counselor for ECOSOC issues, Embassy of the USA;
•    Mr. László Szőke, Chef de Cabinet, Office of the President of the General Assembly, UN;
•    Mr. Early Courtney Rattray, Chef de Cabinet, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, UN;
•    Ms. Maria Francesca Spatolisano, Assistant Secretary-General, UNDESA;
•    Ms. Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa, Officer in Charge, Department of Safety and Security, UNDSS;
•    Ms. Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, Director of the Sustainable Development Unit, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, UN;
•    Mr. Sanjay Wijesekera, Director of Programmes, UNICEF;
•    Ms. Kate London, Strategic Engagement Director, Ban Ki-moon Foundation.

The purpose of the mission was also to participate as the main guest in the French Founders during which the Special Envoy had the opportunity to exchange about his mandate within the UN and beyond.

Lastly, on 3 March, the Special Envoy met with Mr. Zeid Al-Hussein, Chief Executive Officer at the International Peace Institute (IPI). On this occasion, the Special Envoy was appointed as the Chair ad interim of the IPI Board.
