First Road Safety Conference for Parliamentarians by the International Parliamentarians Congress of Pakistan

On 8 February 2023, the Special Envoy contributed through a video message to the first Road Safety Conference for Parliamentarians by the International Parliamentarians Congress of Pakistan. The Special Envoy highlighted how parliamentarians are key in coordinating a country’s road safety strategy through actions such as: providing a legislative framework for road safety and a legal mandate for the work of the various agencies; encouraging compliance with international standards (signing up for the seven UN Road Safety Conventions being central to this); placing a high priority on solid road safety data (Pakistan reports about 4,000 road deaths a year while the WHO estimates more than 27,000); pushing for adequate national financing for road safety; providing effective post-crash response through coordination mechanisms, stronger professional medical care and post-crash investigation; and, providing social, judicial, and financial support to affected families and survivors.
