Panel session on Climate adaptation in the Drina River Basin with an energy-water nexus approach and renewable energy development

26 September 2023 10:30 - 12:00
Hotel Hills Sarajevo Bosnia and Herzegovina

As part of the Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Finland are convening a session looking at renewable energy development in the Drina River Basin.

In the Drina River basin, spanning Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia, collaborative efforts have identified cross-sectoral solutions under the Water Convention. Multi-stakeholder dialogues have highlighted potential mutual benefits by integrating renewable energy solutions across sectors. This includes optimizing biomass production through connections with forestry and agriculture, harnessing hydro and solar resources for agricultural activities, and leveraging existing hydropower infrastructure to stabilize renewable energy sources.

This session offers a strategic platform that bridges key stakeholders from the energy sector, climate, water, and environmental authorities. The discussion will benefit from key findings of the Nexus Assessment, leading to reflect on needed climate action, and to identify cooperative opportunities, both from the basin and on an international scale.
