ECE/CES/STAT/2023/6

The demand for timely, relevant, and trustworthy statistical insight continues to grow at an unrelenting rate. Similarly, the digital age continues to provide quantities of data which require additional processing, storage, analytical and dissemination capability.

The development of Cloud computing services has enabled greater capability in meeting increased customer demand for timely and available information. The traditional approach of providing all statistical services on-premise is no longer viable. However, the adoption of cloud has not been a straight line for statistical organisations.

This publication explores the many opportunities and challenges Cloud technology provides. The perspectives are informed from across many statistical organisations and aim to provide a balanced approach to adopting Cloud capability. Five key themes are explored with a resultant set of guidelines for statistical organisations to reflect on. It is clear that risk appetite can be both an underlying enabler and inhibiter, and it is up to each organisation to develop their Cloud journey plan.
