Mission to Harare, Zimbabwe 6-8 June 2023

Zimbabwe: A lower-middle-income country with a population of 15.99 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 29.9 (WHO, 2023). Zimbabwe has acceded to 1 out of 7 UN road safety legal instruments.

During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to follow up on the Road Safety Performance Review launched in January 2022 and to advocate for safer roads in the country:
•    H.E. Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe;
•    H.E. Mr. Felix Mhona, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development;
•    H.E. Ms. Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade and Minister of Defense;
•    H.E. Ms. Ruth Mavunga Maboyi, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage;
•    H.E. Mr. Laurent Chevalier, Ambassador of France to Zimbabwe;
•    Mr. Edward Kallon, UN Resident Coordinator and UN Agencies Heads.
•    Mr. Munesu Munodawafa, Managing Director, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.

The Special Envoy also visited the Red Cross and a hospital in Harare, specialized in post-crash care.
