On 9 February 2023, the Special Envoy met with H.E. Mr. Xu Chen, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the UN Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland. During the meeting, the Special Envoy introduced road fatalities and injuries as a development challenge globally and in China, especially as the country opens up after Covid-19 lockdowns; congratulated the country for the recent good performance on speed laws and enforcement as well as on helmet laws; expressed appreciation for participating in the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory; encouraged accession to the remaining six UN Road Safety Conventions; and supported engagement with the UNRSF. The Special Envoy informed of potential mission to China later in 2023.
