An interactive map of annual average daily traffic for E-Roads is now available with data based on E-Road censuses conducted for 2005, 2010 and 2015.

 

The UNECE transport statistics database was recently simplified and re-organized to fit user requirements, and publish all transport statistics collected from UNECE member states.

On 1, June the opening celebrations for the the Gotthard Base Tunnel took place.  After seventeen years of construction the tunnel will provide the most efficient and sustainable method for transporting people and goods through the alps in history.

78th Annual Session of ITC

2015

A new publication: "SPECTRUM of Border Crossing Facilitation Activities" is now available and presents the broad spectrum of UN Conventions relevant for border crossing facilitation and of which the UNECE Inland Transport Committee is the custodian, as well as other activities and tools that can make international movement of cargo and people efficient and thus improve access to markets and opportunities at global, regional and sub-regional scales.
A new publication: "Together with UNECE on the road to safety" is now available to mark the mid-term review of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. It offers a comprehensive overview of specific activities and initiatives undertaken by UNECE Inland Transport Committee to address challenges faced by road safety community and covers in detail the work carried out under 11 ITC road safety goals.
On 30th November, back-to-back to its 58th session, the Working Party on Intermodal Transport and Logistics will hold a workshop on "Intermodality leads to sustainability" (programme).

The Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport of Belgium together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) held a workshop on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on 17 and 18 November 2014. More details here.

2013

 

The Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India and Institute of Road Traffic Education, and in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, organized an inaugural "Europe - Asia Road Safety Forum" on 4 December 2013 followed by a session of the Working Party on Road Traffic Safety (WP.1) on 5-6 December 2013 in New Delhi.  For more information, please click on the banner.

 

After its 56th session (Rome, 3-4 December 2013) , the TIR Executive Board issued a statement on the functioning of the TIR Convention in the Russian Federation after 1 December 2013. The text of the statement is available in English and Russian.


TIR guarantee continues to be valid in Russia after 1 December 2013
The UNECE TIR secretariat has been informed that, on 29 November 2013, the Federal Customs Service (FCS) of the Russian Federation officially notified the national TIR guaranteeing association ASMAP about the extension of the FCS-ASMAP agreement until 1 July 2014. Therefore, the guarantees provided by ASMAP in the framework of the TIR Convention will continue to be valid on the Russian territory.

The UNECE and the International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) have launched the e-book on "Regional Perspectives on preventing alcohol-related road crashes involving vulnerable road users".


On 29 August 2013, Lebanon acceded to the Customs Convention on Containers, 1972. See also the map of the Contracting Parties.

Intermodal (road/rail) transport in Europe has declined in 2012 by 11% (click here for more details and figures).


UNECE continues to be worried about the functioning of the TIR Convention in Russia (see the press release).

On 28 June 2013, Denmark acceded to the Additional Protocol to the CMR concerning the electronic consignment note (e-CMR). See also the Contracting Parties page.

 

General Assembly resolution A/RES/66/260 requested UNECE and other UN regional commissions to organize activities during the second United Nations Global Road Safety Week to raise awareness about road safety issues. The second United Nations Global Road Safety Week was held on 6-12 May 2013. UNECE commemorated the week in Geneva, Switzerland, with four key events and a poster exhibition. The events included a symposium on regional perspectives on drinking and driving, an interactive youth and young leaders session “Scouting for Global Road Safety”, a roundtable and poster exhibition dedicated to International Level Crossing Awareness Day, and a discussion forum on insurance and road safety.

75th Annual Session of ITC
From 26 to 28 February 2013, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee (ITC) met for its 75th annual session.

 

2012
UNECE’s World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulation (WP.29) adopted, on 14 November 2012, three new UN Regulations that will significantly increase passenger safety, on the following subjects: Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Child Restraint Systems (CRS), Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS). On Monday, 3 September 2012, the Working Party on Transport Trends and Economics (WP.5) held a workshop to consider and review "Urban Transport and Mobility" in UNECE region. The workshop programme is available here.


The 5th International Environmentally Friendly Vehicle Conference under the auspices of WP.29 has been hosted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy and Environment Canada in Baltimore, Maryland, September 10-12, 2012. The conference brought together world leaders from governments, industry and NGOs to explore the opportunities for innovation and investment in clean transport. On 25 and 26 July 2012, the UNECE Transport Division, the TIR Executive Board and the TIR secretariat, in co-operation with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic held a Regional TIR Seminar. The objective was to analyse the current status of the TIR Convention as the only global customs transit regime.More...

The UNECE draft Global Status Report on inland transport CO2 emissions is available here. The United Nations Global Conference on Assessing inland transport CO2 emissions and the impact of mitigation policies was held on 24 April 2012.


UNECE welcomes the adoption of the GHS by the United States of America. The United States of America thus join some 43 countries around the world that have already implemented or are in the process of implementing the GHS.

74th Annual Session of ITC: from 28 February to 1 March 2012 the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee (ITC) convened for its 74th annual session.

UNDA Project on the development and implementation of a monitoring and assessment tool for CO2 emissions in inland transport to facilitate climate change mitigation: Paving the way For Future Inland Transport Systems (ForFITS)
On the occasion of the 73rd Annual Session of the Inland Transport Committee, the high-level Policy Segment in the form of a Round Table discussion on Transport of Dangerous Goods – Global and Regional Dimensions took place on 1 March 2011.
