Historical information

The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways (ADN) was done in Geneva on 26 May 2000 on the occassion of the Diplomatic Conference organized jointly by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR).

A Diplomatic Conference convened jointly by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) and the Central Commission for the Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR) adopted on 25 May 2000 a European Agreement concerning the international Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways (ADN)

The Final Act of the Conference was signed on 26 May 2000 by 15 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia and Switzerland .

A resolution for the follow-up to the Conference, which was also adopted, intended to create a mechanism to prepare the entry into force of the Agreement by keeping the annexed Regulations up to date in the light of technical progress and by preparing in advance the procedures for recognition of classification societies. It invited the UNECE, the CCNR and the Danube Commission to establish a joint meeting of experts for this preparatory work, that would play the role of the ADN Safety Committee after the entry into force of the Agreement.
