Air pollution has a wide variety of impacts, affecting human health, ecosystems and climate, both near the source and far away. Over the past 10 years the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution has worked with an international scientific network of experts from Europe, North America and Asia to improve the understanding of the intercontinental transport of air pollution across the Northern Hemisphere.
At a recent workshop, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Germany, the Task Force explored opportunities to strengthen its cooperation with the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme under the Arctic Council and with other multilateral efforts assessing the health, ecosystem and climate impacts related to air pollution. Among the topics for enhanced collaboration are evaluating mitigation strategies for mercury, persistent organic pollutants and short-lived climate pollutants (including black carbon and methane).
