Ministerial Board to review strategic direction of the European Environment and Health Process

The Executive Secretary will be in Madrid on 23 February to participate in the sixth meeting of the Environment and Health Ministerial Board.  On this occasion the Ministers of Environment of Armenia, Montenegro, Portugal and the Russian Federation, who were appointed by the Committee on Environmental Policy last October, will assume their seats on the Board.

The meeting will review the strategic direction of the European Environment and Health Process priorities and key milestones for 2015 and 2016.  Discussions in Madrid will focus on three main areas:

  • the links between the Environment and Health Process and the new WHO European health policy, Health 2020.

  • the road map towards the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, foreseen for 2017,  including the links with the post-2015 agenda and the sustainable development goals.

  • The governance of the process, including proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure.

UNECE is a key partner of the European Environment and Health Process through its Multilateral Environment Agreements. The joint Protocol on Water and Health to the 1992 UNECE Water Convention provides structured cooperation between the environment and health sectors to achieve two common goals: reducing water-related diseases and ensuring the sustainability of water resources. The Joint Task Force on the Health Effects of Air Pollution under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution provides a joint forum for UNECE and WHO to work together to examine the effects of air pollution on human health. The Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment to the UNECE Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo, 1991) provides for the consultation of health authorities in the preparation of plans and programmes in a wide range of sectors and the involvement of health authorities in development planning.
