Senior European forestry sector officials highlight the pivotal role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation, water management and energy in the region

Geneva
Senior Forestry officials from the European region are meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, for the 35th Session of the European Forestry Commission (EFC).  Panelists and presenters will be providing expert insight into the key role of forests in a broad spectrum of areas. Participants will also seek to highlight the need for continued coordination and collaboration in the dialogue among the various European forestry entities, to ensure that the sector receives the political attention and support needed to pursue sustainable forest management in the region. The meeting, which is taking place from 27 to 29 April, is being held with the generous support of the Government of Portugal.
Interventions on the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation, water management and energy needs, highlights from the regional findings of the Global Forest Resources Assessments (FRA) 2010 and overviews of planned programming activities and events across the region will be central to the three-day meeting’s discussions.
Note to editors
The EFC was established by the FAO Conference at its 3rd Session in 1947 and provides a biennial policy and technical forum for member countries to discuss and address forest issues of importance to the continent.  Drawing on regional experiences, it also provides advice to the FAO forestry programme. The EFC also serves as a forum for information and knowledge exchange among the experts and policy-decision makers in the forest sector, drawing generally on the expertise of its specialized Subsidiary Bodies, which advise on suitable practices and action with regard to technical and economic problems.  The EFC works in close collaboration with all major actors in European forestry, but in particular with the Timber Committee of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, with which it holds joint sessions every four years and shares a joint programme of work on Timber and Forestry.
