Country needs and future opportunities

Data collection - definitions and classifications
  • There are no internationally recognised definitions and classifications for wood waste. Definitions of wood waste from EUROSTAT classification do not correspond with those of the World Customs Organisation. There is a need for coordination. UNECE has its own definitions for JFSQ and JWEE and is currently exploring the possibility of development of a wood waste classification for the UNECE region.

  • Some data is not collected by member States but calculated based on material inputs and outputs in production chains. Such estimation is data intensive and complex, and capacity building in data collection for the circular economy in the forest sector, aligned with SEEA, is needed.

Soliciting input from Member States
  • An assessment of UNECE member States’ priorities in transitioning to a circular economy and which specific actions on the country level would be the most useful is needed – a survey would be helpful in identify priority actions and policy tools.
