ORMAN 2011: FORESTS IN A GREEN ECONOMY Joint meeting of the 36th Session of the FAO European Forestry Commission and the 69th Session of the UNECE Timber Committee.
At the kind invitation of the Government of Turkey, the meeting “Orman 2011: Forests in a Green Economy” took place in Antalya from 10 to 14 October 2011.
- The presentation of the winning Ph.D. ECE/FAO Thesis Award on Sustainable Forest Management;
- A key note speech on the green economy;
- Presentations on the State of Forests in the ECE region
- The launching of the European Forest Sector Outlook Study and information on other outlook studies being prepared in the ECE region;
- The presentation of the Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy and a related special segment on the Green Economy consisting of five roundtables to touch upon the following issues:
a. Sustainable consumption and production of forest products
b. Low carbon forest sector
c. Green jobs in the forest sector
d. Biodiversity, and valuation and payment for forest ecosystem services
e. Monitoring and governance in the forest sector.
- The presentation of the Forest Products Annual Market Review and related Market Discussions.
In addition to the above, the meeting reviewed the activities and the joint ECE/FAO programme of work on timber and forestry, discussed next steps for the 2013 Strategic Review of the programme, learned about recent developments at the international level in the region, about climate change activities relevant for forests in the region; and discussed a number of other matters in support of the good and effective functioning of the two bodies.
