Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution

The Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution was established by the Executive Body in December 2004. It works to develop a better understanding of the intercontinental transport of air pollution across the Northern Hemisphere, including estimates of specific air pollutants. The Task Force oversees  scientific cooperation activities in the areas of emissions inventories and projections, analysis of ambient monitoring and remote sensing, global and regional modelling, and impact assessment to understand the intercontinental flows of ozone and its precursors, fine particles and their components, mercury, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The main questions of interest to the task force relate to the benefits of international cooperation to decrease air pollution emissions. The information gathered is used in the reviews of protocols to the Convention and to support policy-making decisions on a national and international level.

The Task Force is led by the United States and the European Union. It is composed of experts from Parties to the Convention. Individuals with relevant expertise and experts from non-Convention countries in the northern hemisphere may also be invited to participate in the work of the Task Force. For the full terms of reference of the Task Force, see EB decision 2004/4.
