UNECE road map for mainstreaming Ageing in Georgia discussed at conference at Parliament in Tbilisi

The Georgian Parliament hosted today a conference on ageing policy to support the integration of ageing-related issues in public policies and programmes. The debates, largely based on the findings of the Road Map for Mainstreaming Ageing in Georgia, developed in 2014 by UNECE in collaboration with the Georgian government and with support from UNFPA, will contribute to the development of the country’s action plan on Ageing and thus advance the country’s progress towards sustainable development.

Speakers at the conference included Mr. Dimitri Khundadze, Chairperson of the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Ms. Lela Bakradze, Assistant Representative, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Georgia Country Office, Ms. Vitalija Gaucaite Wittich, Chief of UNECE’s Population Unit,  Mr. David Smith, Chief of Party, USAID/Good Governance Initiative in Georgia (GGI) and Ms. Tamar Chiburdanidze, Chairperson of  the Demographic Renaissance Foundation of Georgia.

Participants  – Members of the Health and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament and other Members of Parliament, representatives of relevant Ministries, academia, United Nations Agencies and International and non-governmental organizations – discussed the current situation regarding ageing in Georgia and adopted a Resolution containing recommendations for integrating ageing related issues in the government’s policies and programmes.

The conference was organized at the initiative of the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia in collaboration with the UNFPA Country Office in Georgia, USAID/Good Governance Initiative in Georgia and the Demographic Renaissance Foundation of Georgia.

After the conference, participants opened the exhibition of photographs “Take Care of Time: Ageing in Georgia seen through the eyes of its older citizens” in the Queen Tamar Hall of the Parliament.  The exhibition, commissioned by UNECE with the support of UNFPA`s country office, was first presented in Geneva at the Palais des Nations in November 2014.
