The TIR Convention at the UN-OHRLLS High-level meeting in Hanoi

21 March 2017
From 7 to 9 March 2017, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) co-organized, in Hanoi, a High-Level Meeting for the Euro-Asia Region on Improving Cooperation on Transit, Trade Facilitation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
From the opening statements and all through the meeting, numerous speakers and panelists pointed at the TIR Convention as the one and only global customs transit agreement. As part of the panel on Enhancing Cooperation on Legal Framework for Transit at Bilateral, Regional, and Global Levels, UNECE raised awareness among participants on the functioning and benefits of the TIR Convention, the Convention on the Harmonization of Frontiers Controls of Goods, as well as the many other UNECE serviced agreements and standards relevant for improving transit.
Among the key recommendations of the meeting, Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and transit countries have been encouraged to ratify relevant international conventions, in particular the TIR Convention and the Harmonization Convention.
