Connecting improved transport infrastructure and data to support SDGs progress in the Danube region

How can countries best ensure resilient transport infrastructure to drive progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? How can enhancing countries’ statistics on transport support this process?

This was the focus of discussions at a recent workshop bringing together representatives working on transport policies from 11 countries and international organizations. The workshop, organized in partnership between UNECE and the European Union’s Danube Region Strategy, was hosted by the Ministry of Infrastructure of Slovenia.

A key objective was strengthening countries’ knowledge of transport-related SDGs, with UNECE highlighting the relevance of the SDG framework to the sustainability of national transport policies, in particular SDG 9 on resilient infrastructure, and how to measure progress on this using existing statistical reporting

The workshop enabled countries to share good practices in the building and maintenance of good infrastructure in road and rail and gathering of transport data to support the monitoring of progress towards SDG targets and to assist in preparing transport policies. It also helped to identify opportunities for mutually-beneficial exchange of knowledge, notably on infrastructure management and the data collection mechanism for monitoring SDGs progress.

Ms. Andreja Slomsek from the Slovenian Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy presented the process of Voluntary Country Reporting on SDGs achievement in Slovenia, underlining the necessity of the full commitment of governments in this process. Countries welcomed the initiative of UNECE to support better understanding of SDG targets and indicators, building on the work already initiated in many countries to advance the monitoring of progress towards their achievement.
