UNFC now available in Thai

Experts from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand recently translated the United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC) into Thai. A copy of the publication in Thai was presented to Mr. Scott Foster, Director of the UNECE Sustainable Energy Division, by Mr. Sommai Techawan, Deputy Director-General of DMR, during the opening of the seventh session of the Expert Group on Resource Classification that was held as part of the UNECE Resource Classification Week 2016 (25–29 April).

DMR is a Government organization that is responsible for advising the Thai Government on all aspects of geosciences, as well as providing geoscientific information and advice to the public. DMR is working to facilitate application of UNFC as the national mineral resource classification system in Thailand. Efforts include a recent Seminar on UNFC in Thailand organized with relevant Government offices, including the Department of Primary Industries and Mines (DPIM), Mining Industry Council, Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) and Pollution Control Department (PCD). The first draft of a Guideline on “Mineral Resources Classification based on UNFC-2009” in Thai has also been completed. An update on the progress of these activities was provided by DMR during the Expert Group meeting. This update included the results of two case studies to apply UNFC in Thailand: to the Pha Daeng Zinc Mine and to the Chatree Gold Mine.

UNFC is now available in Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, English, Hungarian, French, Russian, Spanish and Thai. UNFC became operational at the end of 2013 with the publication of the specifications for its application (ECE Energy Series No. 42). The Expert Group on Resource Classification agreed at its seventh session to start work on the next update of UNFC which it aims to issue in 2018.
