GGP recognized as emerging European research project

The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) was awarded the status of Emerging Project by ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure, initiated by the European Council. The GGP is a collaboration of 16 European partners, coordinated by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI). UNECE initiated the Generations and Gender Programme in 2000 and is involved in its administration and data management.

The decision was announced on 10 March 2016 at the official launch of the new ESFRI 2016 Roadmap which identifies new research infrastructures of European interest. In doing so, ESFRI recognized the scientific merit, pan-European relevance and socio-economic impact of the GGP. With this status, the GGP is following the steps of other projects such as ESS (European Social Survey), SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) and CESSDA (Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives) which have a longer history on the Roadmap and are now ESFRI Landmark Projects.

The GGP is a longitudinal survey covering family and demographic issues. Its data sheds light on the full spectrum of factors influencing current demographic trends and as such serves as a basis for policymaking.
