On 5-6 October 2011 a Workshop on UNECE/WHO-Euro Protocol on Water and Health and the National Policy Dialogue on IWRM Steering Committee meeting was held in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. The Republic of Moldova has benefited from assistance under the project in the framework of the Protocol on Water and Health funded by SDC with support from the UNECE during the period 2009-2010. UNECE supported the process targets setting with respective target dates and the identification of measures to achieve these. The process of target setting has been successfully completed with the signing of a Ministerial Order on 20 October 2010.

The meeting was aimed on: (1) taking stock of the progress achieved in Moldova since the approval of the targets and target dates and of measures carried out; (2) engaging the Ministries of Health and Ministries of Environment and selected stakeholders in a discussion and the review of their capacity and requirements for support; (3) understanding of immediate priorities for the Ministries; (4) discussing possibilities for a 2nd phase of the UNECE-SDC project to support the implementation of the targets under the Protocol.

As an outcome of these meetings the Moldovan Ministries of Health and Ministries of Environment committed to working towards the implementation of targets on water and health, but required financial and in-kind support. They also proposed priority issues such as establishment of Clearing House on the Protocol on Water and Health, Water Safety Plans in rural areas, capacity building for operators, and norms for small water operators, water user associations, training of local experts, awareness building campaigns.

SDC showed interest to continuing the cooperation with UNECE in Moldova and work on the implementation of the targets set under the Protocol with its support.
