Strengthening cooperation оn water quality management in Central Asia, activities in 2017-2018
The First meeting of the Regional Working Group and the Regional Expert Group organized in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) within the framework of the project “Strengthening cooperation on water quality management in Central Asia”, funded by Finland and FinWaterWEI, took place on 24-25 November 2016 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. During the meeting, participants from five Central Asian countries prioritized and selected main activities on addressing water quality issues to be included in the Annual Work Plan of the project. One of the major activities in the Annual Working Plan 2017 was the assessment of needs of national water quality management systems with elements of transboundary cooperation within the five Central Asian countries and further consolidation of data into a regional, basin-wide context.

The second meeting of the Regional Expert Group took place on July 31, 2017 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The main objective of the meeting was to familiarize the members of the Regional Expert Group (REG) with their functions and obligations in the framework of project execution; and to determine the structure of five national reports and one consolidated regional report on needs assessment of national water quality systems of Central Asian countries and to clarify the specifics of work process on its development. On 4-5 December 2017, Almaty hosted a training on "Joint planning of the transboundary monitoring network and visualization of data on water quality" followed by the second meeting of Regional Working Group on water quality. Both events were attended by the members of the Regional Working Group on water quality representing hydrometeorological agencies, water and environmental ministries and departments of the state sanitary and epidemiological control of the region. All five Central Asian countries were represented at the meeting. The main goal of the training was to familiarize participants with the modern internationally accepted water quality management systems, including peculiarities of water quality monitoring, exchange of relevant information and use of monitoring data for joint planning. The overall goal of the Regional Working Group meeting was to determine responsibilities of the Regional Working Group on water quality and empower its cooperation mandate within five countries of Central Asia. On 6-7 September 2018 was held a study-tour on hydrobiological analysis for specialists of national hydrometeorological departments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The event took place at the Center for Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzhydromet) and was organized in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) with the financial support of FinWaterWEI Program.

In February 2019, the Regional Working Group gathered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The key objective of the event was to finalize the Mandate of the Regional Working Group (RWG) on Water Quality, and develop and agree upon the 2019-2020 Work Plan of the Group. The meeting’s proceedings could be obtained here. The meeting was organized by CAREC with financial support from SDC.
