Meetings with Government Officials in Ecuador

Following his visits to Ecuador in October 2016 and January 2018, the Special Envoy travelled to Quito, Ecuador on 1-2 August 2019 and held bilateral meetings with government stakeholders representing Ministries of Transport and Public Health.
During his meetings, the Special Envoy called for urgent action towards addressing road safety, in view of approaching deadline to achieve SDG target 3.6 aimed to halve road traffic fatalities by 2020. Among recommended actions were improving data collection to address the discrepancy in WHO-estimated and country reported figures as well as  adopting a multi-sectoral approach to advancing road safety in Ecuador.
Furthermore, the Special Envoy shared about the recently established UN Road Safety Fund and encouraged applications for funding during the upcoming call for proposals. The Special Envoy also encouraged high-level participation in the upcoming Third Global Ministerial Road Safety Conference, taking place in Stockholm on 19-20 February 2020. 
The Special Envoy met with the following officials in Ecuador:

o Mr. René Abarca, Director of Pre-hospital care
o Ms. Ivette Grijalva, National Director of International Relations
o Ms. Cristina Luna, International Relations Analyst
