Meeting with the Secretary-General, Chef de Cabinet and the transition team at UNHQ

H.E. Ban Ki-moon met with the Special Envoy in the UN HQ. The Special Envoy briefed the Secretary-General on the Global Sustainable Transport Conference held in Turkmenistan in November. The Secretary-General recognized the large number of road traffic deaths and expressed his appreciation of Special Envoy for his commitment to the cause. The Secretary-General pledged to help as much as he can to fight this pandemic. The Special Envoy also expressed his gratitude and reiterated that it was a privilege to serve in this role. The Special Envoy reminded the Secretary-General of his visits to 38 countries, which included meetings local UN agencies which need to be applauded for their efforts.

The Special Envoy provided an overview of his current priorities as well outlined his recent activities, such as participation at the Habitat III Conference in October in Quito, Ecuador and the Global Sustainable Transport Conference in November in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Mr. Edmond Mulet expressed his appreciation to the Special Envoy for his continuous commitment to improving and promoting road safety.

The Special Envoy gave an overview of his recent and upcoming activities and introduced the terms of his mandate. With Asia suffering from some of the highest rates of road traffic fatalities, it is a priority region for his work as Special Envoy. The Special Envoy shared the results of his past visits and contacts in Malaysia and Myanmar as well as his plans to visit Thailand,,South Korea and Mongolia in March.
