First Meeting - UN/LOCODE Advisory Group

A UN/LOCODE Advisory Group was proposed to deal with the main issues related to UN/LOCODE maintenance and development. The Mandate and Terms of Reference of the Advisory Group on the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations (UN/LOCODE) (ECE/TRADE/C/CEFACT/2017/17 ENG, FRE and RUS) has now been approved by the UNECE Executive Committee (EXCOM). The UN/LOCODE Advisory Group will advise and support the UNECE Secretariat and UN/CEFACT in the maintenance and further development of the UN/LOCODE.

In this regard, UNECE will organize the first meeting of this UN/LOCODE Advisory Group in Geneva from 30 November to 1 December 2017 with the following objectives:  

  • Officially launch this Advisory Group and meet the group members
  • Discuss the future project to re-engineer the UN/LOCODE system and set up a repository following the UN/LOCODE business requirement study
  • Discuss a possible revision of UNECE Recommendation 16 which would be conducted through UN/CEFACT following the ODP
  • Discuss maintenance issues relating to the UNLOCODE workflow

The UN/LOCODE Advisory Group is open to key stakeholders, such as

  • UN/LOCODE Focal Points
  • Key users:

    • Governmental Institutions
    • Business
    • Civil Society
    • Consumer Organisations
    • International organisations

  • UN/CEFACT experts

Participation in this launch meeting will be a key opportunity to be involved from day one and to assist to set the stage for future activities.

The UNECE Secretariat welcomes all key stakeholders to work closely to support the development, enhancement and maintenance of UN/LOCODE in a sustainable way and believes that this new Advisory Group will play an important role in future developments. This first meeting represents an important milestone in the UN/LOCODE history.

Where to pick up your UN Badge when you arrive on the first day?

In order to enter the Palais des Nations, kindly pick up your entry badge on Monday morning at the UN Accreditation/Security Building located at Pregny Gate on the Route de Pregny (Bus Stop APPIA). The UN Pregny Gate Security opens at 8:00 am and we strongly encourage you to arrive at least one hour before the start of the Forum as there can be long queues at the security check.

Security measures - Strengthening access controls to the Palais des Nations

Users of the Palais des Nations are kindly informed that starting 1 February 2017, access to the Palais will be made more secure and most of the doors will be controlled by a centralized access security system and can only be opened by means of a magnetic United Nations grounds pass issued to authorized users. Only four doors (C-6, A-15, A-17 and E-40) will be accessible without a magnetic grounds pass from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during working days to enable access to visitors and conference participants. Users can also exit the Palais through these four doors after 7:00 p.m.

Delegates and participants, who need to apply for a Schengen visa are requested to contact the Swiss Embassy in their home country.

Participants who need a visa are strongly advised to apply as early as possible.

Free travel from the airport
Effective January 2008, free tickets for public transport  (TPG) is available from a machine in the baggage collection area (on the left hand side just before passing customs) at Geneva International Airport (Information GIA). This Unireso ticket allows you free use of public transport in Geneva for a period of 80 minutes. In the event of a ticket inspection on the Transports Publics Genevois (TPG) , CFF (Swiss Railways) or Mouettes Genevoises (municipal ferries), anyone holding this type of ticket may be asked to show their airline ticket. If you are staying at a hotel, youth hostel or campsite, the establishment will offer you a “Geneva Transport Card”, which allows you to use public transport in Geneva free of charge during the period of your stay. (More information is available from Genève Tourisme or the establishment concerned.)

Public transport (transports publics genevois)
In Geneva, public-transport tickets (TPG) must be purchased prior to boarding a tram, bus or ferry. Ticket machines are available at most stops. Travel cards or passes can be purchased at the main TPG centres (Rive, Cornavin and Bachet de Pesay) and at newsstands. Please note tickets are not available on the bus itself.

Taxis are readily available from the airport. They are metered, so costs will vary, but the journey from the airport into the city centre will usually cost around CHF 30. The following direct telephone number will ensure arrival within minutes: 022 331 41 33. A taxi stand is located on rue Varembé

Participants are advised to book their accommodation early. Some of the hotels listed may apply United Nations preferential rates.
Some participants have preferred to stay in neighbouring France due to cheaper accommodation costs. There are usually good public transport connections to Palais des Nations. See pages 11 and 12 of the list below for recommendations.
