Mr. Jean Todt, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety and Michelle Yeoh, actress and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador were presented the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Awards by United Nations Association of New York on 26 October 2016. The theme of this year's gala was "Improving Global Road Safety". The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon attended the gala dinner along with other distinguished guests.

UNA is a non-profit organization supporting hundreds of programs over the years. The past honorees of the UN Day Humanitarian awards include Marco Bizzarri, President and CEO, Gucci; Anthony Lake, Executive Director, UNICEF; Stefan Persson and the Persson Family, Chairman, H&M; Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women; Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman and CEO, BMW Group; Christy Turlington Burns, Founder, Every Mother Counts.
