Convention on Road Traffic of 1968 and European Agreement Supplementing the Convention - 2006 consolidated versions |
The Vienna Convention on Road Traffic was done at Vienna on 8 November 1968. Since its entry into force on 21 May 1977, it replaces previous road traffic Conventions, notably the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, in accordance with Article 48 of the Convention.
The European Agreement Supplementing the Convention on Road Traffic was done at Geneva on 1 May 1971. It entered into force on 7 June 1979.
These texts have been periodically amended, in order to keep pace with technological advances and a growing demand from society in the areas of road safety and protection of the environment. Thus, the Convention and the European Agreement underwent two lots of amendments, which respectively entered into force in 1993 and on 28 March 2006. In addition, the Annex the European Agreement was subject to another set of amendments, which entered into force on 27 January 2001.
According to Resolution No. 257, adopted by the Inland Transport Committee on 7 February 2006, the Secretariat prepared a publication with the consolidated versions of the Convention and the European Agreement, which include the amendments mentioned above.
In addition to the consolidated versions of the Convention and the European agreement, this publication also includes: a historical background, the list of distinguishing signs used on vehicles in international traffic, the list of Contracting parties to the Convention on Road Traffic and the European Agreement, declarations and reservations, and an alphabetical index.

and Protocol on Road Markings Additional to the European Agreement - 2006 consolidated versions |
The Convention on Road Signs and Signals was done at Vienna on 8 November 1968. Since its entry into force on 6 June 1978, it replaces previous road signs and signals Conventions and notably the Protocol on Road Signs and Signals of 1949, in accordance with Article 40 of the Convention.
The European Agreement supplementing the Convention on Road Signs and Signals was done at Geneva on 1 May 1971. It entered into force on 3 August 1979 . This Agreement was supplemented on 1 March 1973 by a Protocol on Road Markings, which entered into force on 25 April 1985.
These texts have been periodically amended, in order to keep pace with technological advances and a growing demand from society in the areas of road safety and protection of the environment. Thus, the Convention and the European Agreement underwent two lots of amendments, which entered into force in November 1995 and on 28 March 2006 respectively. The Protocol on Road Markings underwent one amendment which entered into force on 28 March 2006.
