| In April 2004, representatives
from over 20 countries and international organisations participated in the first Expert Meeting on
Monitoring Radioactive Scrap Metal organised by the UNECE
Secretariat. The objective of the meeting was to document
the current knowledge and experience applicable to the
monitoring, interception and managing of radiation contamination
incidents, specifically related to scrap metal and to
recommend future actions. The experts reviewed and analysed
existing
regulations, both national and international, and considered
policies and experiences made in the monitoring and interception
of traded and transported scrap metal for radioactive
contamination in more than 40 countries world-wide. The
