72nd Session of ITC

On 23-25 February 2010 the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee (ITC) convenes for its 72nd annual session. The Committee will review the Transport Division’s body of work and decide on the steps ahead.

High-level officials from the 56 UNECE member States, the European Commission, international and European transport organizations and non-governmental organizations will attend the session, assessing transport challenges and the role of UNECE in overcoming them.

Some of the issues to be addressed at the 72nd session of the Committee include inland transport security; developing Euro-Asian transport links; transport infrastructure agreements; border crossing facilitation; road traffic safety; vehicle regulations; transport of dangerous goods and perishable foodstuffs; promotion of sustainable transport; and operational activities/assistance to countries with economies in transition. In addition, the secretariat will present the draft “White Paper on Efficient and Sustainable Inland Water Transport in Europe”, prepared under the auspices of the Working Party on Inland Water Transport.

A special high-level policy segment will take place in the afternoon of 23 February 2010 on “Sustainable Transport Development: The Case of Inland Water Transport”.
