The RID/ADR Joint Meeting appreciates the initiative taken by the Expert from the  YAUnited States of America for restructuring the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (ST/SG/AC.10/C.3/R.486). Organisations responsible for modal aspects of the transport of dangerous goods have also acknowledged the need for such restructuring, in particular because of the need to improve the "userfriendliness" of the Recommendations.  Y$A2. The RID/ADR Joint Meeting considers that a new structure of the Recommendations should be based on a central part in a tabular form. This table would include all provisions common to all modes of transport and would be designed in such a way that it could be completed in order to cover the specific provisions particular to specific modes of transport. If a compatible system could be established, it would facilitate the implementation of the UN Recommendations through the legal instruments applicable to various modes of transport, and it would also be easier for those parties who have to apply these instruments to comply with their requirements.  Y A3. Adaptation of the existing provisions of RID/ADR to the UN Recommendations is one of the main features of the restructuring of RID/ADR, and a lot of work has already been achieved. The work has been nearly completed, and an original structure, taking full account of the existing Recommendations, has been developed for RID/ADR. The RID/ADR Joint Meeting suggests that the same structure should serve as a basis for restructuring the UN Recommendations, as evolution of the UN Recommendations towards an incompatible structure might involve difficulties for keeping RID/ADR provisions in line with the UN Recommendations.
