High-level Workshop on
The Economic Dimension of Security in Europe:
Facing New Challenges in a Changing Environment

8 March 2004
Palais des Nations, Room XII, Geneva

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), jointly with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), will organize on 8 March a one-day high-level Workshop on the "The Economic Dimension of Security in Europe: Facing New Challenges in a Changing Environment". The Workshop is part of the UNECE "Wider Europe" project.

The Workshop is expected to:

  • Explore how regional cooperation and integration between the enlarged EU and non-acceding transition economies will affect the future shape and direction of the economic dimension of security in the next decade, while avoiding the creation of new divisions in the region;
  • Examine the factors contributing to threats of the economic security in the region, such as weak governance, lack of rule of law, and economic and social disparities;
  • Discuss how to address related issues such as transborder crime and other illegal economic activities.

Speakers and participants will include representatives of: international organizations; Governments and Parliaments of UNECE and OSCE member countries; the European Commission; business; NGOs and academia.
