Work Session on gender statistics

6-8 October 2008, Geneva, Switzerland

 

The main purpose of the meeting is to facilitate the exchange of experiences among countries on gender statistics and present the work of the three UNECE Task Forces in the area of Gender Statistics (TF on Gender Statistics Training for Statisticians, TF on the Measurement of Gender-based Violence, and TF on UNECE Gender Statistics Database). At the same time, the meeting will serve as a means to take to stock of Gender Statistics achievements in the National Statistical Offices in both the production and the dissemination of gender statistical data and to address emerging issues in the areas of gender within subpopulation groups and economic indicators for gender analysis.

 
Joint UNECE/WBI Workshop on National Gender Statistics Training Programs
13-14 December 2007, Rome

 

The purpose of the workshop is to take stock of current status of the national training programs on gender sensitization of national statistical offices in countries of the Network. Expected outcomes of the workshop are updated skills of trainers in the regional network on various topics, detailed report on the current status of the national training programs, and detailed report on the planned national events to take place in the coming year.

 
Global Forum on Gender Statistics

10-12 December 2007, Rome

 

The Global Forum was the first of a series of international meetings on gender statistics to be held annually with the purpose of promoting the advancement of gender statistics among decision makers and all other user groups.

 

Regional Training of Trainers Workshop on Gender Sensitization of National Statistical Systems in the CIS and SEE countries

Organized in co-operation with the Agency on Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan, UNDP, UNFPA, FAO, UNIFEM.

23-27 April 2007, Almaty, Kazakhstan

 

The aim of the workshop is to help statisticians and users of statistics working in government agencies to change the National Statistical System (NSS) to improve the gender relevance of the statistics produced and disseminated in a country and to assist NSSs to provide relevant, gender statistics that can be better used for gender analysis. Through a series of interactive training modules, discussions and activities, the workshop is organised for national statistical offices and other agencies/ministries involved in collection, production and dissemination of gender relevant statistics in the CIS and SEE countries.

 

Workshop on gender statistics

The UNECE Task Force on Gender Sensitisation Training for Statisticians organized a one-day workshop on the practical issues on integrating the gender perspective into a national statistical system. The Task Force has been working on a manual for this type of training. The workshop provided an arena to discuss these issues with UNECE member countries.

 

Work session on gender statistics

The aim of the meeting is to exchange experience among statisticians and other experts in the field of gender statistics. The specific objectives of the meeting are to present the work of the three UNECE Task Forces in the area of Gender Statistics (TF on Gender-sensitization training for statisticians, TF on Violence against Women, and TF on the Promotion and development of time-use surveys), take stock of Gender Statistics achievements in the National Statistical Offices, both in production and dissemination of gender related data, and address emerging issues in the area of gender and minorities.

 

UNDP/UNECE/World Bank/USAID Subregional workshop on gender statistics

11-15 July 2005, Tashkent, Uzbekistan

 

The main objectives of the meeting were:

  • To expose users and producers of gender statistics in the countries in the sub-region to a dialogue on the need to mainstream gender into the production, dissemination and analysis of statistics and to improve the use of statistics for gender-sensitive policy making in these countries
  • To strengthen the dialogue between users and producers of gender statistics in Uzbekistan with the view to identify the relevant gender issues in the country and to initiate the necessary steps for a better mainstreaming of gender into the national statistical system
  • To initiate a dialogue in Uzbekistan and other countries in the region on the need for relevant statistics on unpaid work and violence against women and to identify methodology that could be used to collect relevant data in the region
UNECE Work session on gender statistics

The meeting had the following objectives:

  • to take stock of Gender Statistics achievements in the National Statistical Offices, both in production and dissemination of gender related data;
  • to address emerging issues in this area, such as time-use surveys, the link between societal attitudes/behaviours and gender equality, and the identification of appropriate indicators and sources to measure violence against women.
Joint UNECE-UNDP-UNFPA-WHO Training Session on Gender Statistics

This one-day training session was focused on the needs of CIS and South-Eastern Europe countries and addressed the three following subjects:

  • Basic issues in measuring gender attitudes
  • The measurement of women and men’s time, basic concepts
  • Collecting data on Violence against women (VAW)
UNDP/UNECE Sub-regional Training Workshop on Gender Statistics
13-15 July 2004, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

 

In response to the urgent needs and numerous requests expressed by countries, a sub-regional training workshop in Turkmenistan was held in July 2004, as part and necessary element of the on-going UNDP/ECE efforts to improve the availability, presentation and use of gender statistics in the region.

 

More specific objectives of the workshop were to improve the production, presentation and use of statistics to monitor gender equality by contributing to:

  • Better understanding of gender equality issues by the staff of national statistical offices
  • Better consideration of gender issues in the collection and dissemination of official statistics (going beyond sex-disaggregated data)
  • Better use of existing statistics and data sources and the development of additional statistics
  • Better use of statistics for developing and monitoring gender equality policies
  • Improved dialogue between users and producers of data
UNECE/UNDP Task Force Meeting on the Gender Statistics Website for Europe and North America

25-26 September 2002, Geneva, Switzerland

 

Further on the first Task Force Meeting in May 2001, this meeting focused on improvements of the website contents and priorities for its future development.


UNECE Work session on gender statistics
23-25 September 2002, Geneva Switzerland

 

The work session dealt with various issues of gender statistics, such as:

  • Gender differences as the consequence of macro-economic changes and policy decisions; use of institutional (business) surveys and registers as measurement tools for gender dimensions in economic development processes;
  • Gender equality indicators at national, regional and local levels; identification of a gender perspective in statistics in order to establish feasible sets of indicators, with special attention to international comparability and policy relevance, common efforts of statisticians and policy-makers;
  • Attitudes, norms and values as factors in changes of gender inequality and related measurement and methodological issues;
  • Balancing work and family responsibilities in different life-cycle positions; time-use, labour force and other surveys as relevant monitoring vehicles.

UNECE/UNDP Task Force Meeting on a Regional Gender Website
2-4 May 2001, Geneva, Switzerland

The project on a Gender Statistics Website for Europe and North America was launched in Orvieto in October 2000 at the UNECE/UNDP Workshop on Gender Statistics for Policy Monitoring and Benchmarking. It was agreed that a Task Force should act as an advisory board to guide the implementation of the website. The Final Report from this Task Force Meeting is available here.

 

UNECE/UNDP Workshop on Gender Statistics for Policy Monitoring and Benchmarking
9-10 October 2000, Orvieto, Italy

The main objectives of the workshop were to obtain an assessment of the situation in relation to gender issues and statistics in countries of the region and allow countries to review and discuss the proposal for a regional website. The workshop was also an opportunity for participating countries to assess how suitable and relevant their gender statistics are as a basis for policies and for monitoring progress, and to what extent the gender perspective has been incorporated into their national policies and programs.

 

UNECE Work session on gender statistics

The following topics were discussed at this Work Session:
  • The identification of national priority gender issues and the statistics needed for the implementation and evaluation of policies and programmes;
  • Gender sensitive indicators and broader gender equality indices;
  • Gender differences in formal and informal education, use and access to new technologies. Consequences for labour market access, career and earnings;
  • Gender dimension of aging populations in terms of differences in health, care needs and responsibilities, economic participation and income;
  • Role of women and men in decision-making processes: changes in their participation in political life, business and other influential positions in the public sphere;
  • Regional website proposal and outcome of Workshop on Gender Statistics for Policy Monitoring.
