Development Assistance Committee - OECD
The OECD working party on gender equality.

Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations - FAO
FAO's Sustainable Development Department designs policies, strategies and methodologies to foster the active participation of rural people - men and women - in agriculture and rural development. Click here for more information.

International Labour Organisation - ILO
International standards and guidelines for labour statistics and surveys/studies on specific topics-such as informal sector, home-based work, child labour, etc. To visit the ILO Gender Promotion Program, click here. Alternatively, the ILO's Gender Website can be found here.

International Telecommunications Union - ITU: Gender Issues
The Task Force on Gender Issues within the ITU serves as the main organ for effecting the mainstreaming of gender issues. In collaboration with the Development Sector, it aims to ensure that the benefits of telecommunications and the emerging information society are made available to all women and men in developing countries on a fair and equitable basis.

United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women - UNDAW
UNDAW advocates the improvement of the status of women of the world and the achievement of their equality with men. It aims to ensure the participation of women as equal partners with men in all aspects of human endeavour. It promotes women as equal participants and beneficiaries of sustainable development, peace and security, governance and human rights. It strives to stimulate the mainstreaming of a gender perspective both within and outside the United Nations system.

United Nations Development Program - UNDP
UNDP's Gender in Development Programme (GIDP) advises, supports and facilitates UNDP gender equality policy, dialogue and practice, and promotes the empowerment of women. The UNDP Virtual Gender Library is maintained by the the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS.

United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean - ECLAC
Promoting gender equality in Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC's Women and Development website contains a set of gender statistics for the region, various publications and studies, information on projects, meetings and other events (available in Spanish only). The ECLAC Gender Statistics (Estadísticas de género) website is home to 22 profiles of countries in the region, based on a minimum set of indicators, and to a series of regional comparative socio-economic indicators relating to: population and health, education, households and family, employment, income and political participation. The data has been updated to the period 1999-2000 for all the countries with the corresponding data.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - UNESCO
UNESCO's website on women and gender equality contains information on UNESCO's efforts to integrate a gender perspective in its work. UNESCO's Institute for Statistics provides online access to data on education and literacy.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees - UNHCR
Contains among other information, statistical information on refuges and other persons of concern to the UNHCR as well as information about a series of special programmes UNHCR has developed to ensure that women have equal access to protection, basic goods and services as they attempt to rebuild their lives.

United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF
UNICEF Programmes have an explicit focus on policies, legislation and programmatic support to protect children in vulnerable situations. Programmes also give special emphasis to improving the understanding of gender issues.

United Nations Development Fund for Women - UNIFEM
UNIFEM promotes women's empowerment and gender equality. UNIFEM focuses on three areas: on strengthening women's economic capacity, on government and leadership, and on promoting women's human rights. Also, please see the UN Development Fund for Women in CIS Countries.

United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women - INSTRAW
The mandate of the Institute is to serve as a vehicle at the international level to promote and undertake research and training programs to contribute to the advancement of women and gender equality worldwide.

United Nations Population Fund - UNFPA
The United Nations Population Fund works mostly with developing countries and with economies in transition. The Fund has three main programme areas: reproductive health including family planning and sexual health, population and development strategies, and advocacy.

United Nations Statistical Division - UNSD

Women Watch
A joint UN project to create a core Internet space on global women's issues. It was founded in March 1997 by the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW).

World Bank - WB
WB's Gender Net site describes how the bank seeks to reduce gender disparities and enhance women's participation in economic development through its programs and projects. Includes a database on gender statistics divided by countries and themes.

World Health Organisation - WHO
For women, health and the environment, maternal health, violence against women, and all other health-related topics.

 

NETWORKS

ASTRA
A network of activist organizations in Central and Eastern Europe that has as a main objective the promotion of women's sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region and ensures a prominent place for these issues on national and regional agendas.

Commonwealth and Gender
The gender equality program of the British Commonwealth.

Equal Opportunities Commission - EOC
The leading agency in the UK working to eliminate sex discrimination.

European Women's Lobby
The coordinating body of women's NGOs in the European Union.

Global Fund for Women
The Global Fund for Women is a grantmaking foundation that focuses on human rights for women. It supports issues as diverse as literacy, domestic violence, economic autonomy, and the international trafficking of women. It supports women's groups based outside of the U.S.

Interagency Gender Working Group - IGWG
Established in 1997, the IGWG is a network of NGOs, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Cooperating Agencies (CAs), and the Center for Population, Health and Nutrition (PHN) of the USAID. The IGWG promotes gender equity within PHN programs, in order to improve Reproductive Health/HIV/AIDS outcomes and foster sustainable development.

International Development Research Center - IDRC: Gender and Sustainable Development Unit
A public corporation created by the Canadian government. The site includes information about IDRC gender-based research initiatives and funding. Also links to resources on gender analysis and practical examples.

International Food Policy Research Institute - IFPRI: Gender Research Network
This network is sponsored by USAID/WID to link gender and intrahousehold researchers worldwide. It includes an e-mail network on intrahousehold and gender aspects of food and agricultural research; a newsletter; an e-mail conference on gender and property rights; and a new Gender and Development Policy Discussion.

International Planned Parenthood Federation - IPPF
This is the largest voluntary organization in the world concerned with family planning and sexual and reproductive health.

International Union for the Scientific Study of Population - IUSSP
International professional association dedicated to the scientific study of population, including gender issues.

Network Women's Programs - NWP
Founded by George Soros in 1997, this Program is part of the Open Society Institute (OSI), a private operating and grantmaking foundation that develops and implements a range of programs in civil society, education, media, public health, and human and women's rights, as well as social, legal, and economic reform.

Nordic Institute for Women' s Studies and Gender Research - NIKK
NIKK - the Nordic Institute for Women's Studies and Gender Research is an interdisciplinary Nordic research institution financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Their aim is to advance, initiate, co-ordinate and inform about Women's Studies and Gender Research both within and outside of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden).

Research Centre for Gender Equality - KETHI: Greece
The basic aims of KETHI's activities have a dual focus: to conduct social research on gender equality issues and to improve women's status and enable their advancement in all areas of political, economic and social life within the framework of the policies defined by the General Secretariat for Equality.

WEDO

An international advocacy network that seeks to increase the power of women worldwide as policymakers in governance and in policymaking institutions, forums and processes, at all levels. They hope to achieve economic and social justice, a peaceful and healthy planet, and human rights for all.

WIDNET
An online database on women and development (from UN publication, The World's Women 1995 - Trends and Statistics). Links to websites and documents related to women.

Work-Life Research Centre
A multi-site centre founded by researchers from three academic institutions in the UK. They focus on the relationships between employment, care, family and community.
