MAKING GENDER STATISTICS

Disseminating gender statistics

GENDER STATISTICS PRODUCTS

Data broken down by sex are available in many specialised publications of a Statistical Office (e.g. labour force statistics, demographic statistics, health statistics, education statistics). Although all statistical products should reflect the reality of women and men in society, gender statistics is more than data broken down by sex (see What is gender statistics). Thus, it is important that statistical evidence on gender issues is brought together in a single statistical product that is best tailored to users' needs. The following outlines the major issues that need to be considered in preparing a gender statistics product. For more detailed information, please refer to our list of selected reference material for disseminating gender statistics.

When preparing a gender statistical product, the following items need to be considered:

  • Different statistical products for different users - defining the scope of the publication, developing a budget and a timetable.
  • Making a plan for the production of the gender statistics product - managing the work by drafting a work plan, selecting a team, and assigning tasks and responsibilities.
  • Raising funds and support for the product: not only financial but - often even more important - in terms of expertise and networking.
  • Preparing the draft product and allowing for testing and discussion by users before revising, producing, and presenting to the general public.

We plan to add examples of gender statistics products of countries and regions as soon as possible.
