GENDER ISSUES

Policy areas

Since all policy areas directly or indirectly have an impact on women’s and men’s lives, they are all relevant to gender mainstreaming. These include areas that have traditionally been considered gender-neutral and not relevant when looking at aspects of gender inequality – such as finance, trade, foreign policies, etc.

However, it is difficult to list all policy areas and issues of concern in countries of the ECE region. The list presented in this section was developed taking in consideration problems and concerns as emerged in reports prepared by single countries of the region and issues commonly raised when looking at gender inequality. This framework of policy areas and gender issues is also intended as a basis for data users and producers for their work on the improvement of the statistics necessary to address gender concerns.

By clicking on the following key policy areas, you will find the main gender issues for each of them as well as a list of recommended indicators to evaluate the situation of women and men in the ECE region.

Population
Families & households
Work & the economy
Education & communication
Public life & decision making
Health
Crime & violence

These areas are not considered to be exhaustive and will be updated and expanded in the future. The key policy areas used for the gender indicators were defined at the Orvieto meeting (October 2000), and have been modified at the ECE/UNDP Task Force Meeting in Geneva (May 2001).
