The analytical use of national statistics by the ECE secretariat

1. In order to provide the Conference with greater insight into the analytically-oriented statistical work carried out by the ECE secretariat, the Statistical Division, with the approval of the Bureau, invited the ECE's Division for Economic Analysis and Projections to inform the Conference of the work it does using data supplied to it by national statistical offices, finance ministries, banks and other institutions. In view of this, under item 6 of the provisional agenda Mr. Paul Rayment, the ECE's Deputy Director of the Division for Economic Analysis and Projections, will inform the Conference orally of the work his division does on a recurring basis in analyzing the economic changes that are taking place throughout the region. This work is generally reflected in his Divisions's two major annual publications, the Economic Survey of Europe and the Economic Bulletin for Europe . Copies of recent issues of these publications will be available at the plenary session as additional background information.
2. Mr. Rayment's presentation will also deal with issues concerning the data that ECE countries supply to the secretariat, which serve as the basis for this work.
