Standards for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

26 September 2018

The International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG)

Taking place as a side session to the 41st ISO General Assembly (GA), the Standards for the SDGs event will bring together representatives of the standards community, UN agencies, corporate entities, diplomats and national policymakers. This multi-stakeholder engagement will showcase the role of standards for the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Background

This event will explore the potential of voluntary standards as powerful tools in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Closing session

With an interactive programme including panel and breakout sessions, the event will present practical approaches for standards users (for example, mapping tools created by UNECE that link standards with the SDGs they can support), and examine four SDGs in detail: SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation; SDG 7 Affordable and clean energy; SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities; and SDG 13 Climate action.

Participants will discuss case studies in which the practical application of standards to the 2030 Agenda is exhibited. These case studies will highlight the inherent dynamism and innovation that underpins standards, and detail how global policymakers have successfully implemented standards for the SDGs.

Case Study Submission

Have you used standards in your own country? Did standards help you move toward your policy goals? Do you have an interesting story to tell?

If you do, and if you wish to contribute to our research, please, share your story with us by compiling a case study. The case studies we receive will be appraised by UNECE and partners. Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to present their work, as a panelist, at the event.

The case study template is available HERE and the final date for submission is Tuesday, July 31.

Participants

The event provides a unique opportunity to connect the standardization community with high-level representatives of the United Nations agencies, Geneva-based international organizations and NGOs, the diplomatic community, and national policy makers, who do not usually have an opportunity to engage with standards-setting bodies.

Further Information

UNECE invites all interested parties to contact regulatory.cooperation@un.org for further information on the event, and to follow on the conversation on Twitter #StandardsfortheSDGs.
