Pupillography demonstration

Measuring levels of fatigue is possible, scientific and vital

Tired drivers are at a higher risk of causing severe road crashes. Uncontrolled reflexes when “waking up”, extended reaction times or the complete absence of reaction can lead to road accidents resulting in severe damage, injuries and fatalities.

Pupillography is the measurement of the reactions of the pupil. According to Dr. Herbert Helmle from AMTech Pupilknowlogy GmbH, over the years pupillography has become a proven, efficient and objective method of detecting and measuring fatigue. The graphs below show the pupil fatigue waves of an alert (green) and a sleepy (red) person. The measurements were performed using a somnometer F²D - a pupillometer suitable for road side fatigue measurements.

On 6 and 7 May 2013, Dr Helmle will be at the Palais des Nations, and participants attending the United Nations Global Road Safety Week events being organized by the UNECE and our partner organizations will have the opportunity to personally experience the pupillometer and to measure their levels of fatigue on Monday, 6 May, 14.00 to 15.00 (inside Room V) and on Tuesday, 7 May, 10.00 to 13.00 (outside Room VIII). On 7 May, Dr Helmle will also be speaking in Room VIII from 17.20 to 17.50 on this topic.
