Big Data

Review paper by the Big Data Task Team

In-depth review of Big Data

The Bureau reviewed Big Data and official statistics in October 2013, and noted that individual statistical organisations do not have sufficient resources to tackle all issues related to Big Data. Therefore, international collaboration is needed and there is a sense of urgency to bring this work forward.

Outcome of the review

The Bureau launched a project to specify priority areas for action for the statistical community regarding Big Data. The work is overseen by the High-Level Group for the Modernisation of Statistical Production and Services.

Related initiatives

The Eurostat meeting of Director Generals of national statistical organizations (DGINS), held in September 2013, was devoted to the topic of Big Data. An action plan and roadmap should be adopted by mid-2014, and integrated into the Eurostat work programme.

OECD is actively working in the area, and has for example released a policy paper on Exploring data-driven innovation as a new source of growth: Mapping the Policy Issues Raised by Big Data.

A one-day side-event to the 2013 meeting of the UN Statistical Commission was titled Big Data for Policy, Development and Official Statistics.

The World Bank organized several events on the topic of Big Data, including an event on Turning Big Data into Big Impact in October 2012 and a live webcast What happens when Big Data meets official statistics?
