UNECE signs Partnership for Sustainable Development with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: United Nations Strategy for 2016-2020

UNECE and the United Nations Country Team announced today that they will continue their support to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s development efforts over the next five years. This will be achieved through the implementation of a Partnership for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Strategy for 2016-2020 signed on 31 October by Mr. Nikola Poposki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Country Team.

The Partnership Strategy summarizes the collective strategic response of the United Nations system to national development challenges over 2016-2020 and is structured around five focus areas: employment, social inclusion, good governance, environmental sustainability and gender equality.

UNECE has committed to contribute to the following UNPFD outcomes:
  • By 2020, more women and men are able to improve their livelihoods by securing decent and sustainable employment in an increasingly competitive and job-rich economy;
  • By 2020, national and local institutions are better able to design and deliver high-quality services for all users, in a transparent, cost-effective, non-discriminatory and gender-sensitive manner;
  • By 2020, individuals, the private sector and state institutions base their actions on the principles of sustainable development, and communities are more resilient to disasters and environmental risks.

During the next five years, UNECE will work on increasing competitiveness of the economy by improving the innovation policies, trade facilitation and development of agricultural supply chain. It will continue supporting the Government in the implementation of the recommendations made in the 2nd Environmental Performance review as well as strengthening transboundary water cooperation in the Drin river basin.

The Partnership Strategy aligns UN activities globally with the SDGs, regionally with European Union accession, and nationally with the National Sustainable Development Strategy and Action Plan as well as sectoral strategies. Full-scale implementation of the 2016-2020 Partnership Strategy will require an estimated total of USD 120.9 million.
