Sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention, third session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on PRTRs, their joint High-level Segment and associated meetings

11 - 15 September 2017

Budva, Montenegro

The sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), the third session of the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Protocol on PRTRs), their Joint High-level Segment and associated preparatory meetings took place in Budva at the kind invitation of the Government of Montenegro.

The events provided a platform for Parties, signatories, international organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to discuss achievements and challenges with regard to promoting effective access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in relation to a wide range of issues affecting the environment. The two sessions featured a Joint High-level Segment where delegations focussed on the role of the Aarhus Convention and its Protocol in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Joint High-Level Segment

The thematic session of the JHLS comprised of two panel discussions related to the themes of the Budva Declaration. Panellists shared examples how the Aarhus Convention and/or the Protocol on PRTRs can be used to support achievement of one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals.
