Implementation roadmap

The Strategy on ESD follows the following implementation road map:

• Phase I (2005 - 2007) - taking stock of existing activities, implementing initial measures, and defining piorities for further activities;

• Phase II (until 2010) - starting to integrate SD into learning programmes and curricula, review progress made in the implementation of the national strategies and revise these strategies if necessary; and

• Phase III (until 2015) - making considerable progress in implementing ESD.

2011 - 2015:  Priorities for the implementation of phase III

In 2011, the implementation of the Strategy entered its third phase. At its sixth meeting, the Steering Committee prioritised the following activities for phase III:

• Finalising the initial drafts of National Strategies and Action Plans by the end of 2011;
• Promoting the coordination between education and environment departments in particular, but also the coordination between governmental departments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
• Promoting educator competences and adapting them to regional needs;
• Monitoring the progress and challenges in the region;
• Better connecting policy to school activities, the member States commited to install ESD plans in every school by 2015;and
• Collecting evidence about the impact of ESD activities on student learning.
