The Group of Experts on Renewable Energy was established to carry out action-oriented, practical activities on renewable energy in line with the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.

The Group of Experts on Renewable Energy focuses on activities that help significantly increase the uptake of renewable energy in the region and that help achieve the objective of access to energy for all in the ECE region. The Group of Experts facilitates regulatory and policy dialogue and sharing of best practices on various renewable energy sources, including biomass, with a view to increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Two informal preparatory meetings took place with selected experts from member States and key thought leaders in the renewable energy space. Participants discussed the state of development of renewable energy in the UNECE region and exchanged views on the role that the Group of Experts could play to increase the uptake of renewable energy in the region. Recommendations were made for the draft work plan of the Group of Experts to enhance value added, increase collaboration with other stakeholders and launch specific activities in preparation for the first session of the Group of Experts on 18-19 November 2014, during UNECE's Sustainable Energy Week.

It was the second meeting held in Paris with representatives from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that confirmed data gaps and needs in the UNECE region and allowed to define next steps.

Data for a large part of the UNECE region in central and eastern Europe, central Asia and the Caucasus is not readily available, up-to-date, accessible or reliable. This is an obstacle for strategic energy planning in many countries and represents real value added for future activities of the Group of Experts. Participants also identified further areas of key impact. Find the summary here.
