WOMEN IN POWER, THE ADVANCEMENT OF WOMENNGOs to Assess the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action
in the UN/ECE RegionOn 17-18 January 2000, more than 500 NGO representatives are expected to meet in Geneva at the Palais des Nations to assess the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in the UN/ECE region (see provisional agenda attached). The meeting is expected to prepare concrete proposals for action for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europes (UN/ECE) Regional Preparatory Meeting on the 2000 Review of the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, due to take place on 19-21 January 2000 in the same location. In order to do so, four main caucuses will address the main themes of the Conference, namely
Women and the economy
Women and violence - Trafficking and domestic violence; Violence against
women in war/conflict situationWomen in power and decision-making
Institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women
On Monday 17 January, taking the opportunity of this region wide gathering, NGOs will organize a number of workshops to give substance to the caucus deliberations which in turn will help to facilitate an effective dialogue between governmental and non-governmental participants. Some workshops will also address other issues and prepare for the global event in June in New York (see list attached).
