Ministerial Conference - Ensuring a society for all ages: promoting quality of life and active ageing (Vienna, Austria)

19 - 20 September 2012

18 September 2012: a civil society forum and a research forum will take place.

The UNECE Ministerial Conference will host a poster exhibition to showcase good practice examples and innovative approaches in implementing MIPAA/RIS. UNECE member States as well as NGOs and scientists participating in the Ministerial Conference are invited to submit their good practice examples until 30 May 2012 (see link below).

Call for posters

With this Ministerial Conference, under the motto "Ensuring a society for all ages: promoting quality of life and active ageing", UNECE member States will mark the tenth anniversary of MIPAA/RIS.

The principal goal of the conference will be to evaluate implementation of MIPAA/RIS in the five years since the León Conference, asking how much progress has been made, where there is still room for improvement, and how to approach the challenges that still remain. Active ageing and in particular the participation of older persons in society will be at the heart of the ministerial segment of the conference, which will seek to set priorities for the coming five years for improving the quality of life of people of all ages. Experts and ministerial panels will tackle pressing policy questions such as how best to promote the participation of older persons in the labour market and societal activities, as well as means of creating enabling environments for healthy and independent ageing.

The Ministerial Conference will be hosted by the Austrian Government under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection and will also include the participation of NGOs and the scientific community. The Conference will conclude with a Ministerial Declaration.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

CONFERENCE VENUE

Aula der Wissenschaften (Hall of Sciences)

The Aula der Wissenschaften is a meeting place combining tradition and modernity. Dating back to the 17th century, the building with its lecture halls was originally used by the university. The Aula der Wissenschaften is very centrally located - only a few minutes’ walk away from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It is thus in the direct neighbourhood of a great variety of hotels, restaurants, bars, underground car parks, cultural institutions and shopping areas.

Several underground lines (Stephansplatz U1, Stubentor U3 and Schwedenplatz U4), buses (Wollzeile/Riemergasse 1A) and one tram (line number 2, Stubentor) converge in this area.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

WELCOME RECEPTION

The Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection and the European Commission have the pleasure to invite all conference participants to the Welcome Reception on 18 September 2012, from 7 p.m. in the Marble Hall (Marmorsaal) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection, Stubenring 1, 1010 Wien.

The Welcome Reception will thus take place in an impressive historic building which dates back to the beginning of the 20th Century when it hosted the Austrian-Hungarian Army during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The building, designed by famous architect, Ludwig Bauman, with its with 326.000 cubic metres and nearly three thousand windows is one of the last remaining ring road buildings (Ringstraßengebäude). Today the neo-baroque structure houses several Ministries.

It is centrally located, within walking distance of the Conference Venue and the City Centre.

HEURIGEN EVENING

"Let's go to the Heurigen" - this is the typical expression to set off into a sociable evening, with good music, wine and tasty food in all cosiness.

"Heuriger" is the Viennese expression for the wine of the latest harvest and the name for the places where it is served – at the “Heurigen”. Originally, they were taverns where local vintners sold their wine, usually situated in the vineyards on the outskirts of Vienna. Today, the “Heurigen” have become an essential part of Viennese life where locals and visitors enjoy wine and rustic specialities.

Located in Neustift am Walde between vineyards and the Vienna Woods, Fuhrgassl-Huber with its cosy parlours and romantic patio has been a popular wine tavern for almost 30 years.

The mayor of Vienna has the pleasure to invite all conference participants to the Heurigen Evening at Fuhrgassl-Huber on Wednesday, 19th September 2012, from 8 p.m.

A bus transfer to the Heurigen and back will be organised for all conference participants.

Address:
Weingut Fuhrgassl-Huber
Neustift am Walde 68
1190 Wien
