RUSSIAN FEDERATION, 1989 CENSUS SAMPLE

1. Basic Information About the Census

The 1989 Russian Population and Housing census was carried out as a part of the census of the former Soviet Union. It reflects the state of the population as of midnight, 11 January 1989. The data were collected between 12 and 19 January 1989. The enumeration period was followed by a post-enumeration survey carried out from 20 to 24 January, when 25 percent of the dwellings were revisited. Data were collected through personal interviews. Information on persons who could not be contacted directly was obtained from family members, neighbours, landlords, and/or community, housing or other relevant authorities.

4. Organization of Files

The sample is being distributed as four separate files. The files are in SAS transportable (sequential) format, generated using the XPORT engine, which is platform independent and can be imported into most popular statistical packages (e.g. SPSS or BMDP). The data distribution media for all beta and pre-release versions of the data sets assembled as part of the PAU’s census samples project are CDs.

5. Other Remarks

Russia’s data set is a 5 percent family/household sample from the 1989 Population Census (it was drawn as a 20% random sample of the long-form questionnaires, which were administered to every forth family/household).
